Self-Discovery Thought Leader: Joan Senio
As women, we face a unique set of challenges as we age.
Many of us struggle with being appropriately assertive early in our lives, but even those of us who have overcome that difficulty can begin to lose our verve once again, later in life. Society’s expectations and a somewhat ageist culture, personal experiences, and even our own self-doubt and anxieties can make it difficult to find – and use – our voice after age 50 and beyond.
We need to, though. We must work to overcome any hesitation we have and confidently express ourselves. Because we have wisdom and experience only we can share.
We owe it to the future generations of women who are watching the behaviors we model. And, who will closely follow in our footsteps. We owe it to ourselves, too.
“This self-awareness becomes the foundation on which we can build our authentic voice.”
Because we gain a powerful sense of liberation and empowerment when we find our voice and use it! Find our voice after age 50 and beyond.
-
Take Time for Self-Reflection:
One of the essential steps towards finding our voice is engaging in self-reflection. We must take the time to look inward and understand our values, passions, and aspirations.
We must also acknowledge that we may no longer be the same woman that we believed we were in our 30s and 40s. Moreover, we’ve lived through many experiences, and they have changed us – sometimes for the worse, but more often for the better. We need to reflect on the crises we’ve encountered, the miracles we’ve witnessed, the kindnesses and generosity of our mentors, and the new thoughts and vision we see in our younger colleagues, family and friends.
Everything we have learned along the way will inform and provide valuable insights into who we truly are and what we stand for – today. By journaling, meditating, or simply having quiet moments of introspection, we can also gain clarity on our desires and goals. This self-awareness becomes the foundation on which we can build our authentic voice.
-
Embrace Authenticity:
Getting comfortable with our authentic selves is the next key step to finding our voice after the age of 50. Once we realize what our true self is like, we must embrace that true self, faults and all, unapologetically and without compromise.
Society may have conditioned us to conform to certain stereotypes or expectations, but as we grow older, we realize that we have the power to break free from those constraints. Practicing authenticity means we give ourselves permission to express our thoughts, opinions, and emotions openly. Whether or not they are popular or widely accepted.
It is through this genuine expression that we can connect with others on a deeper level, establish our true identity, and also make a meaningful impact on others and in our communities.
-
Build a Supportive Network
Surrounding ourselves with a supportive network is essential on our journey to finding our voice. Connecting with like-minded women who share our values and passions can provide encouragement, validation and support as we stay true to ourselves.
“Our unique life journeys have shaped us into resilient, compassionate, and insightful people.”
Whether it be through joining support groups, attending workshops, or seeking mentorship, building a strong support system can help us navigate the challenges that may arise. The wisdom and guidance of those who have already found their voice can inspire us to keep pushing forward and embracing our own power.
-
Embrace Your Experiences:
It is important to recognize that our voice matters, regardless of our age.
Society often dismisses the experiences and perspectives of older women, but we have a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to offer. Our unique life journeys have shaped us into resilient, compassionate, and insightful people. By speaking up, sharing our stories, and advocating for our beliefs, we can create positive change in our lives and the lives of those around us.
Our voices have the power to challenge stereotypes, inspire younger generations, and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society.
Find Your Voice:
As women, finding our voice after the age of 50 can be a powerful journey of self-discovery, authenticity, and empowerment. Through self-reflection, embracing our authenticity, building a supportive network, and recognizing the value of our voice, we can reclaim our power and make a lasting impact.
Let us embrace this new chapter of our lives with confidence, knowing that our voices are valuable, relevant, and deserving of being heard.
