The 116th Congress officially convened this past Thursday. In this new Congress, many of the senators and representatives made historic firsts as they were sworn in.
Not red nor blue but ALL woman – here are a few of the historic moments from Thursday’s swearing in:
- Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota are the first Muslim women elected to serve in Congress.
- Ilhan Omar became the first ever Somali-American member of Congress.
- Ayanna Pressley was sworn in as the first black congresswoman to represent Massachusetts.
- Marsha Blackburn joins the Congress as the first female senator from Tennessee.
- Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia became the first Latinas to represent Texas in Congress.
- Debbie Mucarsel-Powell of Florida became the first Ecuadorian-American, as well as the first South American immigrant, sworn into Congress.
- Kyrsten Sinema is the first female senator elected to represent Arizona.
- Kansas and New Mexico sent the first Native American women to Congress; Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland.
- Abigail Spanberger is the first woman to represent Virginia’s 7th District.
- Lastly, the Dancing Queen, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman elected to the House of Representatives.
