Decluttering Tips: Finding Your Personal Style In Your Closet

If you have a closet full of clothing, but nothing to wear, then you may think that your first step is to declutter your closet.

Three Steps To Take Before You Declutter Your Closet:

I have found that for many women, decluttering what doesn’t work before working out what does work can make them feel even more discouraged. So, start by doing this:

1. Get Clear On What Your Personal Style Is NOW!

Your closet can be a graveyard of the clothes you used to wear, for the body you used to have, and the life you used to have. What is your personal style NOW? Take out a few items you love, even if they don’t fit you anymore. Lay them on the bed and look for the commonalities. Is it the styles, the colors, the fabrics? If you don’t like anything in your closet, then go into a few stores and look at what you are drawn to.

“Get real about what you need in your closet to support you in the roles you play. Not the other way around.”

2. What Is Your Lifestyle NOW?

How do you spend your days? Do you work from home or the office or hybrid? Do you spend loads of time running your kids around. Or, do you have an active social life that means you often get dressed up? Get real about what you need in your closet to support you in the roles you play. Not the other way around.

3. What Works For Your Body Shape NOW?

Yikes! I know this is a tough one because we are complicated when it comes to our bodies, especially as we go through many body changes. I know that your body is as unique as you are. That being said, I have found a few tips that have helped the many women I’ve worked with as general guidelines. Take what works and leave the rest.

  • Wear shapely clothing instead of baggy. Bag-like clothing doesn’t cover up or make you feel fabulous. Shapely clothing will make you look slimmer instantly. And shapely doesn’t mean tight. It just means that the clothing follows the line of your body.
  • Define your waist. When you define your waist, you give your shape balance and make your legs look longer.
  • Think upside down triangle not block. When you wear tops and dresses that have flare at the hem, it makes whatever is above it look narrow in comparison (like an upside down triangle). This can give your shape balance and make you look slimmer instantly. Anything that creates a block like shape just makes you look bigger everywhere.
