Embracing Discomfort

comfort vs discomfort

Food For Your Soul: Dawn McGee

How do you feel about being comfortable vs. uncomfortable?

I’d like to share a recent experience that got me reflecting on the delicate dance between comfort and discomfort. Recently, I had a rare opportunity for a leisurely start to my day, allowing for an extended workout. Surprisingly, I felt a sense of discomfort, straying from my usual routine. This made me think about the power of our comfort zones and the benefits of stepping beyond them.

“It was tougher, but therein lies the magic—the edges of our comfort zones are where we evolve and flourish.”

The Dance Of Comfort And Growth:

Often, we find ourselves at a crossroads between the comfort of familiarity and the discomfort of the unknown. It’s in these moments of discomfort that growth beckons. I chose to embrace the discomfort and embarked on a different kind of Peloton ride, pushing myself beyond the usual boundaries. It was tougher, but therein lies the magic—the edges of our comfort zones are where we evolve and flourish.

As you’ve no doubt heard before, growth happens outside the edges of our comfort zone. This real-life experience exemplifies the need to push those boundaries from time to time. (It’s also important to discern when discomfort serves as a signal for change and when it’s merely a situation that needs addressing.)

At the end of each year, I commit to 100 days of walking my 8k steps every day, without excuses. This year, I’ve also added in a commitment to work my way through my 100 Days of 1% program. This transformative journey is all about nudging our comfort zones. Just a little each day, as a collective effort to foster growth and progress.

Why This Is Magic?

Anytime you embark on a new nutritional approach, I encourage you to ask yourself three questions:

  1. Is it based on science?
  2. Can I do it for the rest of my life?
  3. Would I let my kids do it?

And if you can’t answer yes to all three of these questions, then I’d reconsider! Fortunately, any advice you get from me will give you a resounding yes to all of these three questions.

Throughout these 100 days, I do daily lessons to fuel steady improvements. The heart of this program lies in the philosophy of gradual progression. Making small yet meaningful changes every day. I can’t wait to reflect on my journey after these 100 days. Every time I do this, I learn something new about me and watch my health improve. Which is why I find it so important to take time to intentionally focus on myhealth journey. Good health is rarely found by accident.

“Jumping into the deep end with other people will give you a community of like minded people, accountability buddies..”

The Eating Piece:

This program dives into vital aspects of well-being: eating, moving, and recharging.

The eating piece is connected with my PFC philosophy. Which focuses on a balanced intake of protein, fat, and carbs every three to four hours. This simple approach, starting with eating an hour after waking until an hour before bedtime, transforms your approach to food and leaves you with total food freedom. An overused term to be sure, but I’m serious, it’s possible. The movement piece encourages an exploration of mindful movement—how to incorporate it into your day without overwhelming shifts, positively impacting your energy levels and sleep quality. And, I would argue that the recharge component is most important; addressing sleep, stress, hydration, supplements, and medications’ roles in your overall health.

Celebrate With Intention, Mindfulness, And Good Health:

Could you do this on your own? Possibly. One thing that I hear over and over again is, “I know what to do, I just don’t do it.” Jumping into the deep end with other people will give you a community of like minded people, accountability buddies, and multiply the positive impact.  All aimed at helping you wake up on January 1st, feeling like a rock star, ready to conquer the new year. Your journey to a life you love, without deprivation, is within reach.

You know what they say – the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second best time is now. It’s time for me to make a significant difference in these next hundred days, setting the stage for a healthier, happier start to the New Year. Want to join me? And in case you’re wondering about all of your favorite holiday treats, don’t worry, you won’t have to sacrifice the joys of the holiday season; you’ll be able to celebrate with intention, mindfulness, and good health.
