Food For Your Soul: Dawn McGee

I recently traveled to Japan and had the most wonderful time. I explored, tried new things, and just had fun.

Healthy Habits Don’t Have To Be Boring:

Before that, I spent a whirlwind few days in the Big Apple, complete with a Billy Joel concert, a food tour in Greenwich Village, and even a visit to the Broadway Museum. Now that I’m home, I’m reflecting on how important it is to have fun – whether you’re at home or abroad. I often hear people treating their healthy habits as barriers to enjoyment. But I’m here to tell you that you can be healthy and have fun!

Six Ways You Can Make Your Healthy Lifestyle Fun:

“You should also create consistency in your sleep routine, your exercise, and your daily routines.”

1. Eat Regularly:

You can’t have fun if you aren’t feeling well – and your body needs frequent nourishment to keep you feeling great! Make sure that you don’t neglect to eat throughout the day. I always recommend eating a balanced meal every three to four hours. This helps maintain your energy levels and prevents accidentally overindulging when you’re overly hungry due to low blood sugar. Pack some PFC (protein, fats, carbohydrates) – balanced portable snacks to keep you fueled on the go.

2. Stay Consistent:

Consistency is good for you. You’ll spend less of your time feeling stressed if you set expectations for yourself and stick to them! This relates back to eating regularly: if you have a consistent habit of eating every three to four hours, you will be prepared to stay nourished. You should also create consistency in your sleep routine, your exercise, and your daily routines. When you’re confident in your consistent routines, you’ll be better equipped to find enjoyment in your day. Your body and mind will thank you for this healthy habit.

3. Maintain Physical Activity:

Exploring the vibrant streets of Japan, my daily routine included walking five to seven miles. Whether it was strolling through bustling markets in Asakusa or wandering through beautiful parks like the Imperial Gardens, incorporating intentional movement into the day provided a fun and unique perspective on the local culture. Your exercise doesn’t have to look the same every day. Give yourself permission to find fun new ways to move your body!

4. Seek Out Diverse Experiences:

Trying new things can be a thrilling experience, especially when it comes to food. In Japan, I delved into a variety of flavors and dishes that were both exotic and delightful. From sushi to street food like takoyaki, every bite was an exploration of new flavors.

Don’t be afraid to seek out new experiences; it’s a great way to incorporate fun into your life!

5. Hydrate:

It may not sound exciting, but just like eating regularly, staying hydrated is a necessary healthy habit if you want to have fun. You can’t have fun if you’re dehydrated. You need water to support your digestion, your brain, and other bodily functions, especially if your time zones are shifted or you’re eating a lot of unfamiliar foods. When you’re out and about doing something exciting, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water. So carry a water bottle with you and be intentional about your hydration!

“In a nutshell, trying new things doesn’t mean letting go of what works for you.”

6. Find Balance in Every Experience:

Japanese culture and cuisine made it surprisingly easy to find a balance between indulgence and well-being. The emphasis on fresh, wholesome ingredients helped a lot, making each meal a nourishing experience for my body and my soul. While indulging in all the aspects of Japanese cuisine, I made a conscious effort to stick to the core principles of my Eat, Move & Recharge® Formula. Balancing proteins, fats, and carbohydrates is remarkably easy with the diverse and nutritious options available in Japanese dishes.

In a nutshell, trying new things doesn’t mean letting go of what works for you. By focusing on balance, I enjoyed the best of Japanese cuisine without compromising my well-being. Whether you’re traveling far or just trying something new near home, remember: balance is the key to a happy and healthy life!
