Sexuality Expert: Beth Keil
“Why is 69 called Soixante Neuf?”
Deeply blushing, my college French teacher told me, “It’s because the circles in the number 69 are where people’s heads are.”
Wait For It!
“Have you ever noticed how quickly your emotions and body respond to experiences?”
It took me a few moments to understand the visual she created. Not having been in that position, I could only work it through my intellectual understanding. My emotional and body intelligence had no experience with 69, yet.
Have you ever noticed how quickly your emotions and body respond to experiences, while the intellect has to take time to process it?
This brings us to another French word – La Petite Mort. It has a number of meanings – literally, it means “the small death” and sexually, it has come to be associated with a release during orgasm, where a person faints or loses conscious awareness.
Orgasms Are Not An Intellectual Process, And Therefore, Cannot Be Experienced There!
Instead, it’s your emotional and bodily intelligence that provides you with the experience of orgasm!
Have you noticed the difference between being emerged in an experience and being an observer? Your intellectual intelligence only allows you to observe, while the richness of being in an experience is through the body and emotions. They also connect you to your imagination and intuition, expanding your senses, while deepening your passion!
Our culture fawns all over the intellect, as if it were the only intelligence that existed, let alone mattered. You got exposed to this programming early in your life when you attended school and were tested and graded on what you know. Being “smart” centered around the sciences, math, and languages; everything else was referred to as the “Soft Sciences” or “The Arts”.
No wonder being in the richness of an experience can be challenging. When what you’ve been trained to do all these years is to THINK in an experience! It’s why judging yourself, and questioning how well you’re doing, is so easy to do; you’ve had years of practice!
“Letting a part of yourself die isn’t limited to just the sexual or erotic, but to every aspect of your life, including being a midlife woman!”
La Petite Mort Is Also When You Need To Let A Part Of Yourself Die:
This includes letting yourself go and surrendering, being in the richness of the experience, as it’s unfolding.
What would that be like, especially in the bedroom, or wherever you find yourself?
Letting a part of yourself die isn’t limited to just the sexual or erotic, but to every aspect of your life, including being a midlife woman!
Take a moment and notice what has changed in your life over the years, what and who you’ve left behind, to be where you are – to be where you are right now, there have been deaths, endings, and letting go.
When You’ve Gone Through Each Decade’s Doorway, La Petite Mort Has Been There:
Not everyone or everything comes with you; each decade is like a doorway and is uniquely shaped. What you carry won’t fit through this new door jamb, necessitating a type of death, as you let go of what doesn’t make the cut.
La petite mort may be why midlife women have, and are, initiating divorce in numbers not seen before. You could point to them having their own income and personal independence, but these actually contribute to shaping the decade door!
Like Pruning A Tree, La Petite Mort Allows Other Growth To Flourish:
This process can be scary, taking you into unfamiliar territory. What worked in the past, is likely not to work now. You might find yourself agitated, unsettled, and maybe anxious.
If you’re wanting and ready to let go and surrender, to be in the richness of life’s experiences, but find yourself holding back, it doesn’t have to be so!
