Products YOU May Need To Add To Your Beauty & Fashion Routine In Midlife

“Things, they be a changing”.

That goes for your skin, hair, nails, bones, etc. So it may be time to shake things up in your regimen, from head to toe! Many of us get stuck in a routine that was working for us 3, 5, or 10 years ago. We change, and our regimen often needs to change.

The science of beauty is moving at light speed, and you may not even be aware of the amazing products that are out there! And this doesn’t always mean adding products, it can be an exchange or finding multi-benefit products that provide for your current needs.

“So really consider what your needs are.”

Some Great Products:

Let’s start up top! Your hair may be thinning and not as oily as it once was. There are some great products to aid with thinning, ones that promote hair growth, others that slow hair loss. Read the details and ingredients to find the one that is right for you.

I am a fan of Bosley products, as well as Monat, although it is much pricier. Some supplements can also promote hair and nail growth, but some of those can also contribute to skin breakouts. And for me, I don’t need my current hair to grow, I need new hair growth and to slow the loss of it. So really consider what your needs are.

Our hair can also start to feel more brittle and dry. It may also be time to consider an at-home deep conditioning treatment once per week. I am enjoying the Ultra Color Care Infusions Treatment Masque from Biotera.

If you are noticing a course or dry feeling when touching your hair, frayed or frizzy ends, or your hair’s inability to hold curl or body, give a deep conditioning treatment a try.

“These are an inexpensive option to give you the look of voluminous hair and come in colors that look like your real hair.”

Inexpensive Option:

Another idea is to look for options to make it appear that you have more hair, like Faux Messy Buns. These are an inexpensive option to give you the look of voluminous hair and come in colors that look like your real hair. Also great when you don’t want to do the full wash and dry!

Our Faces:

The face is probably where we notice changes first. You may be experiencing fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, less elasticity, less oil, etc. All of these are normal as we age, but it doesn’t mean we have to accept them. As your skin ages, you may find that the products that were working for you five or 10 years ago, are no longer doing what you need them to do.

That is because our needs change. It’s good practice to routinely access what you are using and why. Below are some products that are either newer or that you may find you need more in this season:

Skin Care BoostersThese are targeted products that contain high levels of specific ingredients like Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid to address specific concerns. You add them as needed or wanted to your regular daily skin care regimen. Because they are so specific, you can get uncomplicated help for your concern.

“Tints work great if you have hair and it just needs color or control.”

Brow Products:

Brow Products -Those luscious brows you once had may now be hard to locate. There are many options on the market for getting a fuller look for your brows. Tints work great if you have hair and it just needs color or control. Liners/pencils have evolved and now have better pigments and texture. Powders are easy to use and easy to remove. And if you want a long-term or semi-permanent solution, check brow lamination, brow tinting, microblading, and powder brows.

Lips:

Primers – especially for the LIPS! Primers make products stick and stay and can also provide a smoother canvas to place your makeup on. They have come a long way and there are now formulas for all types of skin and specific needs like larger pores. A lip primer will take your lipstick up a notch, preventing feathering and bleeding and making it look smoother on your lips. They can also help with lip liner application, allowing it to glide on. Mary Kay has a great lip primer.

Moisturizing Lipstick – All formulas are not created equally when it comes to lip products. Super matte formulas are not our friends as we age. Choose “midrange” formulas, not too moist or too dry, or try adding a gloss in the center of the bottom lip to add a little shine and moisture.

I also layer just a touch of balm underneath my primer, so that my lips are not pulling the moisture out of my lipstick, and I don’t wind up with a dry, faded, color. Message me if you’d like to receive some samples of a great formula.

Cheekbones & Jawlines:

Contour & Highlighter – Don’t fear these products. As our skin and supportive structures lose elasticity, you may find that your cheekbones seem to have disappeared. A contour product can help you to give the illusion of depth.

They can also help where we have a fuller jawline. A highlighter does the opposite and can bring out the top of our cheekbones. The key to using these products is finding the right color and for the highlighter, the amount of shimmer as well. Then you must learn where and how to apply them for the desired results. Many think that contour looks too muddy, if this is the case for you, opt for a Taupe-colored formula, especially if you have fair skin.

Faux Tan Products:

Moving downward, skin on your body needs attention too! Look for body lotions that are skin care. They help with creepiness and fine lines on the body. Oils added to your lotion will add more moisture and a healthy glow. Instead of hours in the sun, opt for the amazing faux tan products on the market. The St. Tropez Tanning Foam is a fan favorite. These are not your stinky orange tanners of yesteryear, and they can give you a beautiful glow and more confidence in baring your arms and legs.

“I find that applying the product and then wearing socks for a while gives me the best result.”

Our Feet:

Finally, those feet! As we age, the increasing overall dryness shows up on our feet. Make sure to exfoliate carefully and apply an occlusive (think thick and waterproof) moisturizer to keep flakes, cracking, and dry areas soft and supple. My faves are Heel & Toe (found at Sally’s), and the natural moisture stick with beeswax from Mary Kay. I find that applying the product and then wearing socks for a while gives me the best result.

Painful Options:

Foot pain may also be an increasing issue, cramping our style, literally. Shoe manufacturers are hearing our cry! Brands like Walking Cradles and Naturalizer are listening to our needs and producing SHOES with comfort at the forefront of the design process. Adding INSOLES may also give you more comfort. And those stilettos may need to go. But no fear, there are so many cute wedges and platforms that are chic and add height, so you won’t miss those painful options.

And for overall improvement in your skin and joints, many women find taking Collagen Supplements to be helpful. Many recommend liquid formulas to get the most benefits.

I hope this gives you some ideas of where you may need to tweak or supplement your routine. Make it a habit to re-assess your needs at least yearly, and be open to trying new products. You may find that what you thought was a problem can be easily resolved!
