Your Money Journey: Lisa Sakai
Are you one of those people who cringe at retirement?
Do you believe that retirement is a distant concept that you don’t need to think about until much later in life? Does just the word retirement make your stomach turn? You’re not alone. So many people share this sentiment, more than you think.
Now we all know, it’s important to consider the future and plan for retirement, even if it seems far away. Although we all know this, it seems so hard to follow it. In the back of our minds, we think of that story of you friend’s dad who spent their entire lives working tirelessly and looking forward to the day they can finally retire, only to have their dreams cut short due to unforeseen health issues or unfortunate circumstances.
“Finding this balance can be a daunting task, but it’s not impossible.”
Planning For Retirement:
We all have that story from someone and it scares us to death! These tales serve as deterrent reminders that we need to prepare for our future and give ourselves options as we age. Why would we do that if we just die two months after retirement? No thank you!
While it’s true that many people thoroughly enjoy their work and have no immediate plans to retire, it doesn’t mean that planning for retirement should be completely disregarded. It’s crucial to find a balance between living life to the fullest in the present and securing your financial future. You may be living your dream life now, traveling to exotic destinations or indulging in your hobbies, but what about when you’re older and want to slow down? Will you have the option to keep living that same lifestyle comfortably?
Finding this balance can be a daunting task, but it’s not impossible. It’s really about truly defining what you want now and planning for it while coupling it with you longer term goals, which might or might not include retirement. Achieving the right balance doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice everything you love about your current lifestyle. It’s about finding ways to align your current priorities with your future goals. At our firm, we call this bucket list planning.
Instead of spending $20 on a shirt that pills and you wear once or twice, why not put together a plan to take your dream vacation to Brazil. Put together your savings plan and allocate 25-30% of your savings goal to that dream vacation. It’s a great motivation to save money, which gives you control, but it also lets you really experience your life now. Don’t wait until retirement, go now, experience now!
Living Life Now:
An essential part of finding the balance between living life now and planning for retirement is regularly reviewing and adjusting your plan as circumstances change. Can’t make your savings goal this month, it’s ok. What can you save this month? Focus on that rather than what you can’t save. Even if a dollar goes into your Brazil bucket, that’s a dollar farther than you were last month. Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and it’s crucial to adapt your strategy accordingly. By staying patient and consistent, you can win big.
“A real financial advisor works with you on strategy, goals and opportunities.”
Life is meant to be enjoyed, and it’s admirable to make the most of every moment. However, it’s equally important to keep your future self in mind. Why not have both? You can! By striking a balance between living life to the fullest today and planning for retirement, aka the future, you can not only have a financially secure future but also the freedom to slow down and live life on your own terms when the time comes.
If planning feels overwhelming or you’re unsure where to start to get that balance, don’t fret. You’re not alone. People work with financial advisors for a reason. A real financial advisor works with you on strategy, goals and opportunities. They don’t just focus on rates of return and investing. If you’ve been putting off living your best life, it might be time to get an accountability partner, like a financial advisor.
Securing Your Financial Future:
Retirement planning should not be viewed as a dirty word or a subject to be ignored. It’s crucial to find a balance between enjoying life today and securing your financial future. By seeking the guidance and building a plan, you can ensure that you’re on the right track to live the life you desire both now and during retirement. Don’t wait until it’s too late; start planning today and pave the way for a fulfilling and worry-free life.
