Ever been in a meeting, at a business event, or standing around a cocktail party when the conversation veers into negative chit-chat territory?
“If you want to live in a higher vibration place, you’ve got to stay in more positive conversations. So what can you do?”
You know what I’m talking about. Everyone hops on the “What do you think about that awful situation over in Springfield” bandwagon and it drags down the energy in the room.
Human nature seems to love talking about depressing, fear-based topics. But if you want to live in a higher vibration place, you’ve got to stay in more positive conversations. So what can you do?
A Person With A Good Idea:
One tactic is to redirect the discussion.
On a Zoom networking and coffee call the other morning, one person brought up the pandemic and I was not having it. I let him ask a couple of questions to one of the other participants and then I said, “Hey, can I jump in here? I’d love to know the wins each of you has had in the past week.”
The pandemic-focused person said, “That’s a good idea!” And we went around the room sharing uplifting and celebratory victories. One person was excited she’s finally found a new job after two years of searching. Another was happy his kids are back in school. A third announced the publication of her seventh book.
At the end of our time together, we left with a more intimate connection to the other group members and a more optimistic outlook.
“I don’t think most people WANT to live in the negative. They gravitate there because it’s familiar.”
We Are All Interconnected:
I don’t think most people WANT to live in the negative. They gravitate there because it’s familiar. They don’t know what else to say and negative is what’s in the news, so they go with current events.
If you subscribe to the theory that we are all interconnected, we are all one, then other people’s focus on the negative affects your personal world too. That means it’s up to YOU to take control and direct conversations and awareness to a higher level.
You can do that by avoiding gossip, criticism, and complaining. Talk about fun, ambitious ideas instead of other people. Or if you are talking about other people, sing their praises and give kudos for their accomplishments. Express gratitude for how circumstances are encouraging growth.
Be A Good Role Model:
Humans are pack animals. It’s up to each of us to light the way. Be a good role model for those around you so they can follow your lead.
This isn’t always easy, especially when we seem to be surrounded by darkness. But look closer. That darkness is an illusion. Gratitude is the torch.
Next time you’re in a group and conversation is heading over the negativity cliff, for the sake of everyone’s well-being, take control of the reins and steer it back to appreciation.
You – and everyone else in the room – will be grateful you did.
