Ah, the infamous “rules” for women over 50.
We’ve all heard them: don’t wear red lipstick, cut your hair short, and for heaven’s sake, don’t even think about wearing a short skirt! But let’s be real, who came up with these so-called “rules” in the first place? And why do we still feel the need to follow them?
“Now, let’s move on to hair. Yes, it’s true that as we age, our hair can become thinner and less lustrous”
Let’s Talk About Red Lipstick:
First of all, let’s talk about red lipstick. Apparently, once you hit 50, you’re supposed to switch to a more “subtle” shade. But why? Is there something inherently inappropriate about a bold red lip on a woman over 50? Of course not! In fact, I would argue that a red lip is even more fabulous on a mature woman. It exudes confidence and a “take-no-prisoners” attitude. So, to all the naysayers out there: we’ll continue to rock our red lipstick, thank you very much.
Now, let’s move on to hair. Yes, it’s true that as we age, our hair can become thinner and less lustrous. But does that mean we have to chop it all off and resign ourselves to a life of “mom hair”? Absolutely not!
Long hair can be just as stylish and flattering on a woman over 50 as it is on a woman in her 20s. And let’s not forget about the power of a good blowout or a well-placed hair accessory. So, to all the people who say we should cut our hair short once we hit a certain age: we’ll stick to our luscious locks, thank you very much.
Short Skirt:
Last but not least, the short skirt. This one really grinds my gears. Who says a woman over 50 can’t wear a short skirt? What’s the magic age where a hemline suddenly becomes inappropriate? Newsflash: there is no such age. If you feel comfortable and confident in a mini skirt, go for it! And don’t let anyone make you feel like you can’t. After all, age is just a number, and our wardrobe choices shouldn’t be limited by some arbitrary societal expectation.
Now, I know what some of you might be thinking: “But what about modesty? Shouldn’t we dress appropriately for our age?” And to that, I say: who gets to decide what’s “appropriate”? At the end of the day, fashion is a form of self-expression, and we should all be free to express ourselves in whatever way makes us feel the most confident and comfortable.
“In the grand scheme of things, what we wear is pretty insignificant.”
Of course, that’s not to say that we should completely disregard common sense. If you’re going to a funeral, for example, maybe a neon pink mini skirt isn’t the most appropriate choice. But in general, I firmly believe that we should all feel empowered to wear whatever makes us feel our best, regardless of age or any other external factors.
Wear The Red Lipstick:
And let’s be real, there are so many more important things to worry about than whether or not a woman over 50 is wearing red lipstick, long hair, or a short skirt. We should be focusing on things like achieving gender equality, combating climate change, and fighting for social justice. In the grand scheme of things, what we wear is pretty insignificant.
So, to all the women over 50 out there: wear the red lipstick, grow out your hair, and don that short skirt if that’s what makes you happy. Embrace your unique beauty and let your inner confidence shine through. Life is too short to waste time worrying about what other people think.
If anyone tells you that you can’t do something just because of your age, smile and say, “Watch me.”

About the Author:
I understand. I’ve also looked in the mirror and felt old.
When I was in my early 50’s I felt invisible. I couldn’t sleep. I had no energy. I was gaining weight. I looked and felt old. Was this going to be my fate? My life? It wasn’t supposed to be this way! I wanted to be the vibrant and lively woman that I saw at a local restaurant celebrating her 80th birthday. She was surrounded by people who enjoyed her company, her wit, and her laughter. I wanted that! I wanted to age with vitality and grace, like Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren.
As a clinical pharmacist with over 35 years of experience and a tango instructor for over a decade, I created “An Ageless Life: Look 10 Years Younger” Program. It’s designed to help women overcome the same challenges I faced. Age is just a number, it’s how you live your life that counts. Want to know more?
